Summer Camps Give Students the Confidence They Need to be Successful
Dec/090
Campers come out of our programs sparkling with confidence because they’ve come face to face with their own success. We don’t leave it to chance, belief, or wishful thinking. We let them experience for themselves just how good they are. We build in opportunities for them to succeed. They don’t just believe they can be successful, they know it – because they’ve done it.
Teens shouldn’t have to miss out on achievements because they’re afraid they’ll fail. They’re afraid to find out they can’t do something. They tell themselves, “As soon as I feel good enough about myself, I’ll try something big. ” But what we’ve found by working with teens is that self-confidence works exactly the opposite way. It comes from going after something aggressively – and achieving it. It’s a matter of starting small, of going for little successes and building from there.
Campers break through the self-confidence barrier over and over again with the help of what we call the Success Model. We use this strategy throughout our programs, not just for academics but for life skills, attitude – you name it. Campers first experience small private successes, then work their way up to giant public ones. All along the way, they’re building on what they know they can do – with the help of lots of repetition and practice. We rehearse for success. They use the energy of their previous success to catapult them into the next.
For instance, when we work through memorization skills, the first things we do are large-group callouts where they can stay anonymous if they’re afraid they don’t know the answer. It’s very safe. Next we practice in small groups or pairs, leading up to individual performance which can be a teen speaking or performing alone in front of the group, or in some cases the individual performance of taking a test. Where they fear to go in one giant step, they can go with confidence in a series of small steps, each built on the foundation of a previous success.
We love it when we get letters from summer camp graduates about their academic breakthroughs. They understand and remember a lot more, their grades have improved, and their SAT and college entrance scores have gone up. These are some of the end results of a process that begins with the way they think about themselves. We hold these truths to be self-evident: Every person is a capable learner, people learn in different ways, and learning happens best in a fun, engaging, and challenging environment.
To get these principles firmly in mind, teens learn their ABCs:
A is for Attitude: What we tell our minds about something in advance will affect the outcome. When young people approach their education from a “This Is It!” mindset and have an insatiable curiosity and a thirst for knowledge, they can learn just about anything. A “bring it on!” attitude makes learning easier.
B is for Belief: What we believe about our abilities affects our performance. If a person believes she’s a poor learner, guess what? Her belief will be a self-fulfilling prophecy. But if she decides to tell herself, “I’m a good learner and I’m getting better every day,” her ability to learn goes up. We all have the power to choose our beliefs – those who choose empowering can-do beliefs are much more likely to reach their goals.
C is for Commitment: There’s awesome power in making a commitment. Once people lock on to a particular goal or course of action, they discover resources they didn’t know they had. When they make a commitment to learning, their energies shift. It’s like a giant lens that suddenly comes into focus.

5 Tips For a Successful Camping Trip
Dec/090
Once you have chosen the perfect location to go camping, there are also several things you have to think through to better enjoy the trip. Here are five tips when going camping:
1. Prepare your camping supplies.
There are various ways to purchase camping supplies. Be sure to make a checklist of all the camping supplies you will buy and have already bought. You may go online and canvass for low-priced supplies. Among the supplies you will need are tents, camping chairs, coolers, bed/sleeping bags, tent heaters, batteries, flashlights, grill, matches, first-aid kits, and lanterns. With the internet you will save time, and may also search for different brands, or further on with the brand you are familiar with. However, if you have time to go shopping for your supplies, you may opt heading to a local store. This will be more of a convenient option if you intend on checking on your supplies’ material, style, weight, dimensions, etc. If you are concerned with buying expensive variants, you may check out your neighbor’s auction for second-hand camping supplies. But remember that with good quality comes good comfort.
2. Bring games/fun paraphernalia.
Whether you are going to your campsite in a family car or a different mode of transportation, make sure you bring games. You will be having fun on the way already. You may bring board or card games, electronic gear, or even oral guessing games with the family. If you have little ones with you, include kids’ toys. This will keep you alive and set for the real camping adventure.
3. Bring a camera/video recorder.
Who wants to forget the moments of the outdoors? Make sure you bring a camera or a video recorder to capture the adventures you are about to take. Opt for a waterproof variant if you are to head for wet areas. Take turns with the gadgets so that nobody will feel left out. Note that you are going camping – electricity may be an issue, so do not forget to bring extra batteries!
4. Plan out outdoor activities.
It is always better to plan on an adventure with your family and friends. You want to ensure general enjoyment. There are many activities for your camping trip – a treasure hunt, a bug-catching event, a nightly campfire of story-telling, wood-chopping, plain fishing, rock-climbing, or even your own version of “The Amazing Race”! Include prizes such as food, drinks, merits and ribbons to culminate each activity. This way, even an ordinary camping chore will be transformed into a rewarding activity. Also consider setting up a base camp for all your outdoor activities. We do not want anyone to lose their way.
5. Make a “to-do” list.
Remember to have a list as your itinerary. Distribute this list to each and everyone in the camping trip. This way everyone is aware of what sort of fun is to come each day. It will also serve as a memento of the wonderful trip to share/shared.

Creating Successful Fitness Boot Camps
Dec/090
When we first started expanding our camps in Georgia and Ohio, local gyms weren’t too thrilled to see us open up a camp in town. Why? Our workouts were so different and so effective that we started stealing their clients! Unlike many of the gym’s clients, our
campers were sweating their butts off, reaching new fitness goals, and loving the accountability that stemmed from the camp camaraderie. So what was so special about our camps? Here’s our brief story:
My wife and I both started our careers teaching in inner-city schools in Atlanta, and we gained valuable experience coaching a variety of sports. With that experience, we started a children’s fitness company that focused on group exercise in after-school programs, etc. As the business took off, we saw a new niche developing – people kept asking us if we ran fitness programs for adults. We are both certified personal trainers and former
collegiate athletes, but up until then, most of our work had been with children. Within a few months, however, we started marketing our first adult fitness camp with help from a few trainers we knew from the gym (those trainers now make up our core team).
Our first camp drew 18 people – some of them freebie friends and some of them partial payment campers. We were just looking to get people in the doors. Overall, it went well, but we made a ton of mistakes that we improved on over the next two or three camps. By
the fourth camp, our numbers had tripled, and the camp was running smoothly. By the fifth camp, we were making more money than we had teaching, and we made the decision to run camps full-time. That decision paid off immediately as we were able to devote more time to marketing, recruitment, and planning which launched our attendance well over 100 campers. Years later, we still run a few camps ourselves, but most of our work is dedicated towards helping people start their own camps.
Use these 3 tips when planning your own boot camps!
1. Dynamite workouts – Our workouts are well planned and organized to accommodate every fitness level. This is a real key to success because both the “super athletes” and out of shape folks can co-exist. We’ll scale reps or rounds to suit each level, but everyone is still doing the same workout!
2. Building Camaraderie – This is something we work on from day one and it takes time to create. Here’s a simple tip but many camps overlook it: Know people’s names! Participants need to know that they are not just a number.
3. Have fun – Your workouts should be challenging, but there are many things that you can add to your camps to make them fun as well. Team games, “camper of the week” awards, social outings are all components that create a fun experience.
Bottom line – running fitness camps can be extremely profitable, but if that is your only motive, you may want to reconsider. Helping people get fit and have fun makes the business extremely special!

The Key to a Successful Camping Season is the Same as the Boy Scout Motto: “be Prepared.”
Dec/090
Camping season is a time for exploring the great outdoors, connecting with family and friends, and truly enjoying the natural world. Whether one is a first timer or an experienced camper, there is always something new to learn and experience. While camping season used to be associated only with summer months, there are many opportunities to enjoy camping throughout the year. The key to a successful camping season is the same as the Boy Scout motto: âBe prepared. â
There are as many ways to camp as there are people who want to camp. For those who prefer a true backwoods adventure, the combination of hiking and backpacking with their camping experience requires a different type of equipment and preparation than those who choose to drive to a state forest or private campground. Certain types of equipment are vital, no matter what style of camping is preferred.
First, even the most intrepid camper needs to sleep! A sturdy sleeping bag is most campersâ choice; sleeping bags are designed to accommodate different temperature requirements from lightweight bags for summer camping to below zero âmummy bagsâ for mid-winter adventures. But a sleeping bag is not really enough for a good nightâs sleep-the ground is a hard mattress!
The wise outdoorsman will choose to put something between his back and the ground. In this, as with sleeping bags, there are a variety of options to choose from, depending on the type of camping. The lightest weight and most portable choice is a simple foam camping pad which weighs less than a pound. For a backpacker, this is a good choice. However, someone who is using his car or truck as transportation may choose an air mattress or even a portable cot!
Cooking is another essential element for every type of camping. While the traditional image of cooking over an open fire may be considered part of the ultimate camping experience, many factors make campfire cooking a less desirable option. Modern camping stoves are lightweight and offer more flexibility than a fire. A good camp stove can boil a quart of water in less than 4 minutes; yet it weighs less than 2 pounds!
Once the heat source is decided on, cookware must be selected. Again, choices are nearly limitless! The simplest choice is a stick for grilling hot dogs or marshmallows, but this isnât a practical choice for a hungry camper. Outdoor cookware sets are nearly as extensive as those a gourmet chef uses. One of the lightest choices is a set which features multi-purpose components made of sturdy stainless steel, ideal for a hiking trip. Other styles of cookware include cast iron dutch ovens, grills, bake ware, and even woks.
Beyond the necessities and preparation for camping, the underlying joy of camping season is the same for all campers. Camping season, whether it is a New England summer, a southwestern fall, or an Alaskan winter, gives people an escape from their daily lives. It represents a connection with the natural world that is usually lost in worlds of skyscrapers, highways, and mundane responsibilities. The rat race is suspended on a camping trip, replaced by long walks, canoe rides, relaxing around a campfire or a myriad of other activities.
Everyone finds something special about camping. People of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to refresh and recharge themselves; it doesnât matter if one hikes the back country or drives an RV into campground. By choosing to visit where they must adopt new behaviors and conform to different rules, campers create a new world for themselves each trip. For them, camping season is never ending.
Let my 20 years of Boy Scouting experience help guide you. If you are a scout, check out my two sections, Boy Scout Gear and Boy Scout Information.
Whether you’re a first time camper or a regular outdoors weekend warrior, we have what you need. If you’re going to sleep in a tent you may need sleeping bags, cots, flashlights, heaters, and bug repellent, we have it. If you’re going to cook, don’t use your good pots and pans. To truly enjoy the outdoor cooking experience, purchase outdoor cookware. Our cookware is made and designed to be use on an open fire or camp stove. Now, if you’re out in the woods and or at a good camp ground, don’t forget some camp furniture.
