Facelifts 101: a Beginner’s Guide
Dec/090
A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat and tighten the loose skin on the face, neck, and underlying tissues. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 138,245 facelifts were performed in the United States last year. Of that, 124,194 are women between the ages of 35-50.
Who qualifies
A facelift is recommended for those with extremely loose skin, deep lines, wrinkles and jowls. This is why the procedure is commonly performed among those over 35, which is when many start to experience and exhibit a noticeable loss of elasticity in the skin due to the aging process. However, patients should realistically not expect to look like a 20 year old.
A facelift is not for those who want to remove signs of aging from around the upper eyelids. That would be done with a separate procedure called an eyelift (blepharoplasty). However, an eyelift can be scheduled along with a facelift. A forehead lift or neck lift, also two separate procedures, can also be scheduled and performed the same day as the facelift.
While not an absolute contraindication, the risk of postoperative complications is increased in cigarette smokers and patients with hypertension and diabetes, notes Wikipedia. In addition, patients should abstain from taking aspirin or other blood thinners before surgery.
How the procedure is done
A traditional facelift is done under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours to perform. However, a facelift can also be done with tumescent anesthesia which has less of the side effects (nausea, bruising) of general anesthesia. While facelift techniques vary, in general, an incision is made along the earlobe near the hairline to conceal any signs of surgery. If need be, a small incision can be created under the chin for additional tightening or removal of facial fat. The skin is then pulled back and separated from the underlying tissue and muscle. Next, the surgeon pulls the muscle and if need be, the underlying tissues upward. He then sutures the muscle to the desired tightness and recovers the area with the skin. In the final stage of the procedure, the skin is pulled upward and the excess skin is cut away. The skin is then sutured or stapled behind the ear, near the hairline.
Common types of facelifts
Although there are several types of surgical facelifts, these are the most common: the deep plane lift or composite lift, SMAS lift, subperiosteal lift/skin lift, mid facelift, and feather or thread lift.
Deep plane lift: Designed for older patients (over 50) with deep folds in the cheeks, nose mouth, jaw and chin. It offers the most dramatic improvement because the deep muscle and tissue under the skin is tightened and repositioned more so than the skin itself. Doctors say this technique is also ideal for smokers.
Composite lift: A deep plane lift that also tightens muscles of the lower eye and upper cheecks.
SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) lift: Also called the “S-lift,” this is great for people who are showing early signs of aging (30s/40s) because a small incision is created in the shape of an “S. ” Through this incision moderate tightening can be done to the skin of the jowl and neck.
Subperiosteal lift/skin lift: This is a superficial procedure that involves tightening the skin and sometimes the layer below the skin. It is usually done in people who are thin with relatively healthy facial muscles.
Mid facelift: Great for people in their 40s and 50s with beginning signs of sagging or folds in the cheeks and nasolabial (nose to lip) area. Smalll incisions are made around the hairline and in the mouth to lift and reposition fatty areas.
Feather/thread lift: Also called the Aptos lift; it is not for people with excessive sagging. Surgical barbed wire thread is used to lift and pull the tissue below the skin without cutting. The stitch is created at the hairline where it can not be seen. Once the stitch is in, it can be pulled for additional tightening.
Results/Recovery
Immediately after a facelift, the patient faced is wrapped in fluffy, surgical badges. During the time the patient will experience mild to moderate facial swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with medication if necessary. According to the ASAPS, most swelling occurs 24-48 hours after surgery then subsides over the next two weeks. However, it will take a total of four to six weeks for the entire face to heal, during which time the patient should avoid strenuous activity, smoking and extended exposure to sunlight. Over the next several months, the skin may feel dry and rough, but will eventually start to feel better.
It is important to remember, a facelift is considered major surgery. In rare cases, a person might develop a post-operative infection or bad reaction to anesthesia. Other rare, but potential side effects can include: temporary or permanent facial numbness, accumulation of blood under the skin and damage to tissues or nerves underneath the facial skin. Also, a facelift does not reverse the aging process, so in some cases, patients may need an additional facelift in the years to come.
How much does it cost?
According to ASAPS, the average cost of a facelift in the United States is $6,532. Overseas (i. e. Singapore, India), the procedure can cost anywhere from $2,500-4,500.

Getting Required Hunting Camp Supplies – Basic Guide
Dec/090
If you’re looking for an escape from the hectic pace of everyday life in the modern world, then a trip into the wilderness can be, literally, a breath of fresh air. Whether you’re a hardcore hunter or just a nature lover, something as simple as a two hour hike and a day trip can be enough to restore sanity, and won’t require much in the way of hunting camping supplies. If you do plan on camping the night away, maybe even try your hand at sport hunting, then you’re going to want to gear up with some hunting camping supplies that will make your outdoor experience a bit more comfortable. You can find most of the hunting camping supplies that you’ll need at an outdoor recreation store like REI, and some of the larger sporting good stores.
Let’s think about shelter. Thie is one of the more important hunting camping supplies that you’ll need. Even in the middle of nature, you’re probably going to want a roof over your head, which is a tent in the language of hunting camping supplies. Look for a tent that can be easily set up and quickly taken down – you’re not going to want to spend half the day struggling with an elaborate construction, so keep it simple. Usually, when it comes to hunting camping supplies, simpler is better. Another thing to consider is that not all tents are water resistant, so you should make sure that your new purchase will protect you in case of rain. Now that you have yourself “covered”, it’s time to talk sleeping arrangements.
You will essentially be sleeping on the ground. The floor of your tent will provide virtually no cushion, so if you’re someone who not only values sleep, but also needs a bit of comfort, then your sleeping bag will be the single most important of all the hunting camping supplies that you buy. When you’re choosing a sleeping bag, remember that they come in different sizes, so pick one that will be long enough for you. Along the same lines, if you have a large or broad frame, or if you’re a little claustrophobic, you might consider going for a double sleeping bag, which will cost a bit more, but will probably be worth it in the long run. The cost of sleeping bags also goes up with quality, but again, the extra money you spend will probably end up being worth the good night’s sleep it provides.
Now that we’ve covered the big stuff, we can think about the smaller hunting camping supplies that will make your outdoor life much more comfortable. A utility knife is, not surprisingly, an extremely useful tool that will come in handy the entire time you’re in the wilderness. If you’re a more advanced level hunter or camper, you can probably get by with just your utility knife. For the rest of you, it’ll come in handy when dinner time rolls around. Another useful instrument is a headlamp. This is a small battery-powered light that straps on to your head with an elastic band, allowing you to keep both hands free while providing a light source when darkness falls.
No matter what hunting camping supplies you choose to gear up with when planning your great outdoor adventure, remember that most of these things are one-time expenses, and once you have these basic pieces of equipment, Mother Nature will always be there for you to enjoy.

Northern Wisconsin All-Outdoors Atlas & Field Guide
A Guide to Your Camping First Aid Kit
Dec/090
Things to consider when buying a first aid kit for an outdoor activity such as camping – and there are so many. Our experience tells us the first thing to consider is the activity you intend on doing and the climate you intend on doing it in. For example, a first aid kit consisting of animal plasters and a lollipop for the children for use in your back garden won’t cut it on an ice climbing trip to Scandinavia. Another important consideration is your ability – if you were to open your first aid kit, would you know how to use each item contained inside? Is it time to maybe enrol on a basic first aid course? Even the most complete first aid kit is rendered useless if the knowledge required to give basic first aid is lacking. For this guide, we’ll assume we will be participating on a low risk camping activity. Our definition of a low risk camping activity: Falls from height will be unlikely. Risk from submersion in dangerous waters (cold, deep, fast flowing etc) will be minimal. Medical attention is available within the hour. Shelter, food and water are no further than 4 miles or one hour walk away. Always make sure you are competent to carry out any activity you plan to engage in. Use your judgement to determine the risk factor of your activity. Always take into account any factors beyond your control – a sudden fall in temperature or visibility can render any activity dangerous. Moving on to the first aid kit, the first thing to be included in any kit is personal medication – that is any medication that has been prescribed to you that you would require on a day to day basis. The rest of your kit should consist of at least: Waterproof First Aid Kit Bag Flashlight Whistle Scissors First Aid Tape Antiseptic Cream Anaesthetic Spray Variety of Gauzes Eye Wash Burn Relief Ointment Variety of Bandages Plasters / Band-Aids Some form a pain relief – Aspirin / Paracetamol / Ibuprofen Latex Gloves An EpiPen or similar You should consider including the following items if not already included in your survival kit: Tweezers A Fire steel or similar Water Purifying Tablets Space Blanket Finally, the following we consider optional but make great additions when pack weight isn’t an issue: Hydrocortisone Cream Insect Repellent Antihistamines Antacids Read on below for a description of each item and its suggested use. Waterproof First Aid Kit Bag There is absolutely no reason not to have a waterproof first aid kit bag to hold your first aid kit contents. The items in your first aid kit should be kept clean and dry at all times – a damp first aid kit is almost like no first aid kit. Flashlight / Torch Chances are you’ll be carrying a flashlight anyway, but should always carry one in your first aid kit. This should be pretty self explanatory; first aid is a lot harder in the dark. Besides this, a torch is a great morale booster when an injured member of your party is immobile in the dark. Whistle Don’t carry just one whistle – carry one for each member of your group in case you need to separate or are separated for any reason. It is not only required to signal for help but is just as important to signal to each other. Scissors These have a variety of uses in many first aid scenarios from trimming bandages and gauze to removing clothing in an emergency. Try not to use these for general tasks and try to keep sterile where ever possible. First Aid Tape First aid tape has an unlimited number of uses, from a makeshift splint to taping on gauze. A roll should be found in every emergency first aid kit. Antiseptic Cream A minor cut or graze wouldn’t normally cause a problem – until it gets infected and can ultimately lead to very serious complications. Application of an antiseptic cream to keep this from happening could be very important. Anaesthetic Spray This may bring some welcome relief to common mishaps such as burns, stings, bites, cuts and grazes. Be sure to read the accompanying leaflet for details on the use of the spray – different sprays can be used on different ailments. Variety of Gauze Knowing when to use a gauze is easy when you know its purpose – to help stop bleeding. A gauze is made from porous fibres designed to absorb and trap the blood and thus help it clot. Do some research on when to and when not to use a gauze. Eye Wash Deemed unnecessary by some , but we like to take an eye wash in our first aid kits so we know we have a convenient and sterile wash available should any of our party be involved in an eye related incident. Burn Relief Ointment It’s surprising just how common burns are encountered on camping trips, even to the most experienced of us. It can happen very easily but luckily can also be treated just as easily with the right gear. Variety of Bandages This includes a variety of sizes as well as shapes and types. Do your research on bandages – learn how and when to use them. Learn how to use one in a splint, how to make a sling, how to make a tourniquet etc. Knowing how to use each type will help you decide which type to stock your first aid kit up with. Plasters / Band Aids Use these to treat minor cuts and abrasions and help keep out infection. Remember to change the plasters regularly and to clean the wound before reapplying a new one. Aspirin / Paracetamol / Ibuprofen It could be very dangerous to give anyone painkillers such as Aspirin, Paracetamol and Ibuprofen. Always make sure the leaflet accompanying these drugs is kept in the first aid kit for reference. Always thoroughly read the leaflet and satisfy yourself it is safe to treat the patient with painkillers. If you are ever unsure, it is always safer not to do so. Latex Gloves These offer protection not just for the patient from infection but also for the giver of first aid. Always practise good hygiene procedures when treating a patient for both the health of the patient and yourself. An EpiPen or Similar An EpiPen must never be used without proper training or medical knowledge. Given the right circumstances and a competent first aider, an EpiPen can significantly increase the chances of survival of a patient in anaphylactic shock. Again thorough research is advised. Tweezers These are ideal for removing foreign bodies from cuts and abrasions. Bear in mind that multi tools such as a Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman usually have tweezers built in – along with a host of other useful items; if your pack weight permits it may be worthwhile investing in something similar. A Fire Steel or Similar Some people carry a lighter or matches, we prefer a fire steel as we know we can depend on it working when we need it. You need one of these in your pack whatever your activity – in fact, put one on your key chain. It can be used with any kind of tinder to make a fire, can be used wet and are virtually indestructible. Water Purifying Tablets Always keep water purifying tablets in your kit, whether you keep it in your survival kit or first aid kit. Even the most simple of incidents can become drastic and life threatening without water and for their size and weight there is no excuse to go anywhere without carrying some. Space Blanket This item is very useful for keeping a casualty warm by reflecting their own body heat. Space blankets are useful in a variety of scenarios. Hydrocortisone Cream Hydrocortisone cream can be used on insect stings, nettle stings and the like. Using a cream such as this can help stop simple things like insect stings and bites from ruining a camping weekend. Insect Repellent Never underestimate the importance of an insect repellent. Why suffer with all those midge bites when you can apply some insect repellent and forget all about them. Antihistamines Antihistamines are considered by many as optional unless of course you suffer badly from allergies. Again, these can help turn a miserable camping trip to a pleasant one with a tiny tablet. Antacids If you know you typically suffer from excess stomach acid, don’t forget to pack a packet of these. As a final note, all of the above items are useless without a competent first aider. If you take part in any outdoor activity, give some serious consideration to taking part in a first aid course for not only your own benefit but others in your group.

The sizes range from 50cm to 60cm with most of the manufacturers who promote freestanding cookers. A freestanding unit offering oven, grill and hob in one appliance, designed to slide between kitchen cabinets. Cookers have adjustable feet to fit flush to worktop height. If you have gas you may wish to consider a dual fuel cooker as these combine the speed of an electric oven with the flexibility of a gas hob. As well as these options, further options available include double oven cookers, allowing you to cook within both ovens at the same time; single oven with separate grill, allowing you to cook in the grill and oven at the same time; single oven and grill, allowing you to cook on either the grill or oven but not at the same time and fan ovens which cook more quickly that conventional ovens. Then there are many choices to make on the extra features available on a modern range cooker or cooker. Here are examples of the main choices:Conventional ovensConventional ovens can be gas or electric. In a conventional gas oven, the heat comes from the gas burner at the rear bottom of the oven. In a conventional electric oven, the heat comes from elements under the base and at the top of the oven. In a conventional oven, heat rises to give a hotter temperature towards the top of the oven, and a slightly cooler temperature towards the bottom of the oven. The heat zones in a conventional oven make it ideal for cooking a number of dishes together, where different cooking temperatures are required. Conventional ovens are perfect for traditional cooking for things like cakes and roast meat. Electric grill Electric grills consist of either single or dual elements, and may have fixed or variable heat settings, depending on the model. The heat output of variable grills can be controlled by turning up or down, between low heat and high heat settings. Fan assisted ovens A fanned oven has an even cooking temperature throughout the oven as the fan circulates the heat. This makes it perfect for batch baking. Heat comes from the element in the back of the cavity, beit in the middle or top of the oven, and the hot air is circulated around the oven cavity so that an even cooking temperature is achieved throughout the whole of the oven. Fanned Grilling Available in ovens showing multifunction and fanned ovens in the specification. Heat comes from the grill element, and hot air is circulated around the food, so that there is no need to turn during grilling. Ideal for grilling meats as it helps cook through the food as well as browning it. Fan and base cooking This feature is available in selected multifunction ovens only. Heat comes from the element in the base of the oven, and is circulated throughout the oven by the fan. Ideal for cooking moist dishes where the filling and the base need to be cooked evenly. Hotplate lidsSome freestanding and range cookers feature hotplate lids. These are toughened glass on some models, or solid cast iron lids on our more traditional Farmstyle range. Lids to gas hotplates (on gas or dual fuel models) have a safety feature – so that if the lid is accidentally closed while a hotplate burner is on, the hotplate burner will be switched off. Automatic programmer and clockAn LED automatic programmer – clock has a full 24 hour digital clock display. It also has a minute minder function and it’s main function is that it can be programmed for automatic cooking in the oven under control of the programmer. You can set cooking start time, or end time, along with the length of cooking time required. When the programmer reached the end of the cooking time set, it will automatically switch the oven off. Minute minder The LED minute minder / clock has a 24 hour clock display. It also features a minute minder function – which acts as a timer to let you know when your cooking needs attention. The desired time is set, and an alarm will sound after the time set has elapsed. The minute minder works independent of the oven, so if your cooking needs an extra few minutes, there’s no need to reset the oven. Multifunction oven A Multifunction oven is an electric oven which has many cooking functions. These functions will include a selection of the following; fanned oven cooking, conventional oven cooking, grill, fanned grilling, base heat only, top heat only, fan plus base heat, intensive bake and defrost. Pyrolytic These ovens usually have a triple glazed door so the oven can withstand the heat required to burn off excess food. The ovens go to extremely high temperatures and automatically lock themselves so you cannot get close to the heat produced. Shelve supports Most ovens feature removable shelves and shelf supports. This makes cleaning even easier – especially as they can be cleaned in a dishwasher. Shelves can be placed in a variety of different positions inside the oven, so that you can position the food you are cooking at the perfect height. Stay clean linersStay clean liners help reduce dramatically the amount of cleaning an oven needs. The special coating burns off most of the fatty by-products and food splashes on impact, leaving your oven much cleaner and needing less wiping. Top heat onlyThis function is available in some Multifunction ovens, and some electric conventional ovens. Heat comes from the element at the top of the oven. Top heat is ideal for browning the top of oven cooked dishes. Inner door glassMost ovens feature an inner door glass panel, which is removable for easy cleaning. Warming plateA heat resistant toughened glass warming plate is a feature of some electric range cookers. It is perfect for warming plates before serving, or for keeping a pan warm at a low heat before serving. Wipe clean enamel interiorThis is a smooth hard wearing enamel oven or grill interior finish, which can be wiped clean after use. For more information see the cookers buying guide
