Camping Gear Basics
Jan/100
Getting good camping gear can be harder than finding a needle in a haystack. Everyone that sells sporting equipment has the basics, but few have personnel on staff that can help you find what you need at a price you can afford. Looking online can be just as tricky – you can’t see what you are getting until it’s too late. The best way to get what you need is to know just what that is BEFORE you start the hunt.
TENTS
There is a tent for all seasons, but not all tents will handle all seasons. In other words, you need to know when you will be camping before you buy your tent. You need to buy a tent in preparations for the worst weather you could possibly face.
Summer Tents are typically light-weight with good ventilation. It is specifically for the hot weather camping.
3-season tents are more open with zipper mesh panels for ventilation in the warmer weather. They are designed for use in the spring, summer, and fall in temperate areas. Although they can do a good job protecting against wind and rain, they are not designed to hold up the weight of snow.
4-season tents are for the serious winter camper. They are stronger and hold up to strong winds and the weight of snow. They do not offer as much mesh for ventilation (a HUGE factor when it comes to hot weather camping) and they are typically the more expensive of the tent varieties.
COOKING GEAR
The way that you are going to cook will probably depend on whether you are hiking to your camp destination or driving up to it. A camp stove can be rough if you are hiking in. Cooking over the open fire does not have to be that difficult if you have the right cookware for the job.
Opening flame cooking is usually done with a grate or grill (to give you a surface to set your cookware on). The very best cookware is cast iron. It’s not light weight, so if you have to hike in to the site then you need to carry as few pieces as possible. This cookware can hold up to what ever you throw at it. Be sure you season it properly before you use it.
SLEEPING BAGS
When it comes to a warm and comfortable nights sleep, down offers the best for weight ratio. The downfall is that if it gets wet, it will take forever to dry and will weigh a ton until it does. Synthetic fill (or waterproof down) is the best choice if you think you might encounter water (condensation or dew). Get a bag rated for 10 degrees COLDER than what you expect to encounter.
This is only beginning, but it will help you get started. The more camping you do, the more time you will want to invest in finding the best gear for your going (and the more money you will probably also invest). Keep in mind that you will probably use your gear the most if it is comfortable and easy to use.

Buy Camping Equipment That Goes Beyond The Basics
Dec/090
If you love camping, then you can purchase your camping equipment that will take you from a regular camper to a true camping fanatic. And if you are not yet a camping enthusiast because you don’t think you can find the comforts of home out at the campsite, then you may just not be aware of all of the things you can buy – camping equipment products available that can bring the creature comforts with you out on the road.
Like any other hobbie, camping has benefited by the technological advances of the last few decades. You will find advanced types of products to buy – camping equipment in every type of gear that you might want. First, there’s apparel that is specifically designed for camping or other forms of outdoor activities that gives you a number of options in limited numbers of garments. Pants with zip off legs, shirts with zip off sleeves, jackets with a number of layers and materials as well as undergarments that keep you dry and warm have all been developed that will give you lots of choices without taking up much space in your backpack. Plus, good, sturdy camping shoes with flexible soles make hiking more pleasant – especially if you’ve got heated socks to keep your toes warm.
When it comes to backpacks, a staple of camping equipment, there are now a number of ergonomically designed models that are scientifically designed to distribute the weight of a pack across the body in the most efficient and least burdensome way, meaning you can carry more with less strain on your back. There are those made for women, for men and even for children, and many have convertible or removable compartments so that you can carry only what you need when you need it. Plus, there are weatherproof models so that your belongings and other items you buy (camping equipment is expensive) don’t have to be stashed in your tent to stay safe.
When you’re tired of hiking and want to set that backpack down for dinner, you won’t necessarily need a fire to cook those meals. There are personal or miniature stoves that boil water or can cook entire meals with an easily carried fuel canister. Water filter systems mean that you can be absolutely certain of water being potable, no matter where you are camping.
For safety and navigation, technology has made a number of differences. Depending on where you are camping, you might have internet or cell phone access available. But if not, buy camping equipment available that will still keep you connected to the world – and particularly the weather. There are radios that can pick up stations for miles around, safety lights that never run out of batteries and can be seen from miles away, and portable GPS systems mean that you’ll never lose your way again.

Backpacking for Beginners, the Backpacking Basics
Dec/090
Backpacking can be a great hobby and sport. It is challenging, adventurous and exiting. It can be enjoyed by almost anyone who is reasonably fit and healthy, whether you are young or old, male or female. There are countless options on how and where to do it. Backpacking is a great way to get some exercise and get fit while having some fun at the same time. Read on if you would like to learn more about backpacking for beginners and what it is all about.
Backpacking is the combination between hiking and camping. Backpacking trips involve hiking through the countryside and wilderness areas and camping overnight. A backpacker has to carry everything they need on their back in a rucksack. A backpacking trip can be short or long depending on the individual; you can stay away for one night or for weeks at a time if you want to.
The longer the trip the more that must be packed and carried, so having a backpacking gear list and planning both the packing and the trip is essential. Some areas that are very popular backpacking destinations will have camp sites set up. They may simply have a fire ring and posted maps or they can have cabins, as well as a pitch for tents and a toilet and shower block. Other areas may have nothing at all and backpackers set up their camp wherever they find a good spot.
There is a community in backpacking. Everyone works together to preserve the wilderness that they love. There are certain accepted and unaccepted behaviors in backpacking. Backpackers try not to disturb or damage the area they travel in. They clean up all traces of their camp and never litter or take anything along their travels. The one thing you are allowed to take is photographs, so a small lightweight camera can form part of your backpacking checklist.
Backpacking requires a person to keep safety in mind always. There are many hazards in backpacking and a person who does not think about being safe is sure to fall prey. The backpack itself can pose problems if a person does not learn how to fit it and pack it properly. The physical activity can be strenuous and a person must be conditioned to handle walking through uneven and rough terrain. Basic first aid and general idea of wilderness safety are other things a backpacker must know. It is easy to get lost and hurt in the wilderness, so every backpacker must have a good handle on staying safe.
People backpack for different reasons. Some do it for the excellent exercise. Some people like backpacking because of the adventure and love of nature. Others backpack as a way to learn and explore the outdoors. Whatever reason people backpack, there are large numbers of them and they continue to explore, love and walk through the wilderness with the common goal of a good backpacking experience.
This is just an outline of the basics of backpacking for beginners, there is a lot more to learn such as how to pack a backpack properly, how to choose the right backpacking cookware and knowing the right backpacking supplies to take. There are many good books on backpacking and I would recommend that you read through one and get a good knowledge of the backpacking basics before you set out on your own adventure. This way you should have a safe and exiting backpacking experience rather than one that you will remember for all the wrong reasons.

Building Camping Tents: The Basics
Dec/090
Like everything else in camping, it all comes down to a good preparation. If you go camping you need to know how to set up your camping tents, you need to be absolutely sure that you have every little item that belongs to the tent (sticks, stacks, rope) and that you know exactly all the techniques on how to build your camping tents. If you do not prepare, building camping tents will be a time consuming catastrophe and it can end up with you all having a horrible experience and going home before the camping trip actually starts. So, make sure you are equipped with the right stuff and knowledge in how to use it.
Practice and preparation
Before you go anywhere you need to put your tent up at least one time, if you have a yard that would be perfect if you don’t go to a park and build it there. This way you know if the tent is complete, if you have everything and it saves you an enormous amount of stress later on if you know how to build your tent. Making mistakes is not so bad if it is in your own yard and you do not have to sleep in the tent that night.
Because you leave the luxury of home behind when you go on a camping trip you need to be sure your stay will be as safe and as comfortable as possible. Especially safety is essential on a camping trip. When this is your first camping trip we advise you to choose a location not to far from your home place, this way you can return home when you stumble upon some problems.
Find the right spot
It is best when you find some plain and even land to start building your camping tents, high land especially when rain is predicted is an absolute pre, this will help you to keep your tent as well as your sleeping bags dry. So look for even, plain and high land.
A Ground Cloth is No Luxury
This is an essential piece of camping gear, it keeps the floor of the actual tent clean and dry and it protects it against rocks and pointy objects. It protects the tents from all kinds of damage. It is a cheap piece of camping gear and you can buy it at every local camping store and even most hardware stores will have it for sale.
Hammer Stacks in the Ground
Almost all of the camping tents come with stacks and you need to hammer those stacks in to the ground. But the most cheap tents also have cheap stacks and they bent and rust and eventually break. So do your self a favor and buy some extra good aluminum or steel stacks. They need to be firm because you need to hammer the stacks to the ground and fix the tent rope tightly so the tents will not blow out even in heavy windy conditions.
Do you still want to go?
All the above sounds like camping is horrible and dangerous and it really isn’t you just need to be prepared. Camping is a real fun and wonderful way to spend time with your family and friends, you are in the outdoors, doing stuff together and experience all kinds of things that only camping can give you. So prepare and enjoy. . .

Oregon Fall Camping Basics
Dec/090
We all love a family camping trip in the summer. We make plans to hit our favorite camping destination where you can fish, swim and sit around a campfire in the evenings. Summer is the premiere time for a camping vacation. Or so many people think.
More and more couples are taking camping trips in the fall months to take advantage of lower campsite costs, smaller crowds and cooler weather. Many campsites reduce their fees after Labor Day, making fall camping less expensive than summer camping, an especially nice savings during the current economic times. Because school has started, there are fewer kids and teenagers camping in the fall, making the campgrounds a little quieter for young and old couples to have a relaxing, and maybe romantic trip. The nights are often chillier as well, offering the perfect opportunity to snuggle up under a warm blanket with a friend or loved one. Plus, the scenery during the fall can’t be beat. The greens of summer turn into vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows.
Fall camping does require two additional planning elements not necessarily considered when preparing for a summer camping trip.
1. Pack heavier clothes and bedding: The days may be sunny and warm, but nighttime temperatures can drop quickly and dramatically. Pack for the unexpected. If you think one sweatshirt should be enough for your trip, you should probably bring two.
2. Check the weather patterns where you will be camping: Prepare for potential changes in weather. Fall weather is more volatile than the summer. Pack rain or snow gear even if the forecast calls for blue skies.
Other supplies do not have to vary much from your traditional summer camping trip. Your camping packs should still include plenty of food in airtight containers, a fully-stocked first aid kit, and essential camping supplies, such as matches, flashlights, lanterns, plastic tarps, rope, and firewood. TFall Camping Destinations
I am partial to the Northwest for outdoor camping and hiking trips. There are a large number of campsites open in Oregon and Washington year round, perfect for fall camping.
1. Castle Rock Campground: Located on Three Rivers, the Castle Rock Campground in the Siuslaw National Forest offers fishing and camping and is open year round.
2. Detroit Lake: Located in the heart of the Oregon Cascades, Detroit Lake offers a number of year round campsites as well as hiking, fishing, boating, and other fun outdoor activities.
3. Washington Coast: For exceptional coastal camping, visit Cape Disappointment, Pacific Beach, or Twin Harbors, all year round.
4. Cape Blanco State Park: This park located on the Oregon coast offers miles of coastal hiking, lighthouse tours, and extra large, private, sheltered campsites.
For more information on year round campsites in your area, go to either www. oregonstateparks. org or www. parks. wa. gov/.
Fall camping is an easy way to enjoy a three day weekend in the great outdoors. Simply take a few added precautions when planning for your camping trip by bringing a few extra supplies and know the area you will be staying in. These simple steps will make any fall camping vacation, whether in the Northwest or beyond, an enjoyable excursion.
