I am going to be backpacking through Costa Rica next week and I need to know if i should bring my Jetboil (isobutane/propane canister) Stove,
or my Primus liquid fuel (Gasoline, Kerosene, White Gas, Jet Fuel) Stove?
Are the threaded “canister style” fuel types readily available in Costa Rica?
thanks.

I doubt you will find the canister fuel for your Jet Boil there. I would bring the liquid fuel stove. But word of caution: You must report the stove in your check baggage otherwise they will confiscate it. If they smell fuel in your canister they will confiscate your fuel bottle.
If I were you I would mail/ship the liquid fuel bottle (empty of course) to your location or to a post office near the airport. I dont think you can ship the pressurized Jet Boil Canister, especially in this day and age.

I was there in 2006. I had the same concern when i was planning the trip. I ended up taking my multi-fuel stove rather than my butane fueled whisper-lite.
Depending on where you are going, it is possible to find butane canisters in areas around San Jose, some shops in Monteverdi, Arenal, etc. However, if you are going far south (like the Osa Peninsula, which i highly recommend), I would stick with your multi-fuel stove.
This being said, I never actually checked with the airline if my butane would have ben allowed, so maybe you could call and ask them. I would have much rather carried my whisperlite.
