Nothing and I mean nothing beats an old coleman lantern eather liquid or propane hung on a tripod support from walmart for 16.00 I have 4 of them they are great 1 of them I also have a clip shield sort of like a sealed beam light kit you can buy that is a handle attached to a metal shield that goes 1/2 way around the lantern causing it to reflect in one direction very good to use.

I disagree with the fuelled camping lanterns for car camping trips. Backpacking is different and we all have LED headlamps.
On my last car camping trip, I used a 300 watt power inverter plugged into my cigarette lighter, a 16-gauge extension cord, and a 13/26 watt handheld, flurescent trouble light that I hooked on my picnic table canopy. It ran for 6 hours without killing the small battery in my car. It worked great and no pollution! You get alot of light using this method!
Some flurescent bulbs put out a more blue spectrum (called “cool white”, I’d recommend the “day light” bulb for night use (easier on the eyes).

Tricky one this. Most LED lights are actually torches or head torches where you want more of a lantern style which I haven’t seen many of them – have a look in the shops. I think that you will need several LED bulbs in the lantern to make it bright enough for the picnic table even when your eyes are used to the darkness.

Look in the better camping and outfitter stores(Basspro Cabela etc)
They have Coleman style lamps that are powered by batteries and LED lights.They last a long time because LED don’t use much energy.
