Went to strike steel to flint and no sparks. I absolutely cannot get a single spark from it. Picked up another piece of flint and made sparks with the included piece of steel. Absolute crap! Don’t try depending on this to start a fire.

The unit I received is a used one. It’s has a fairly visible dent on the rod. The package looks like openned before, and then re-sealed.

Brunton dissapoints by using a cheap imitation of Swedish Firesteel in this fire starter. I was hopeful and my flint makes few sparks and is difficult to use.

I used this product to start a dozen or so campfires while the hunting season was on and it worked fine. You have to spend a little effort in getting the tinder right but after that strike it and enjoy the fire. Good choice!!!!!

I have read several reviews about people not being able to produce sparks with this firesteel. I got mine today and scraped off the protective black coating on the magnesium (they put this on there so it will not spark during shipping). I used the striker that came with the firesteel and only got one small spark. I decided I needed to use more pressure and the thing immediately broke and scrapped up my finger. So I switched to my knife and gave it a shot and I got almost as much sparks as with the Swedish firesteel. This is a decent one but I would go with the Swedish firesteel even though it wears down more quickly than this one.
